Free Rides Volunteers and Breakdowns...

Tonight was really interesting. We did our Free Rides program on Las Vegas Blvd. again, but had some guests. Krissee from Heart Support (www.heartsupport.com) and some out of town volunteers joined us. It's so great to meet people who believe so much in what we're doing, that they want to do it with us. We had conversations ranging from The Olympics to The Bible to the world record for attending Criss Angel's show in Las Vegas (28). And then the JLSC bus broke down on the corner of Flamingo and Las Vegas Blvd. Yeah. One of the busiest intersections in Vegas. That was fun. But, after a few angry horns and a tow truck, we all made it home safe and sound.

If you like what we're doing in Las Vegas, join us. Click on that "What You Do" tab just to the left. We'd love to have you with us on The Strip... and we promise the JLSC bus won't break down... promise.

God blessed Texas

Picture this: We're flying down The Strip in the JLSC bus. A group at a bus stop sees us coming and uses the universal sign for "Hey, we need a ride.", the hitch-hiker's thumb. Imagine their surprise when we actually stopped! Us: "Y'all need a free ride?" Them: "What's the catch?" Us: "No Catch." Them: "Sweet!"

Entertaining conversation ensues. We talked about what they do to what we do, from God to the best show in Vegas. The JLSC bus is never boring...

If you crazy Texans are reading this, thanks. You really made our night.

And we have honestly never met a nicer bunch of Texans.

Oh yeah, Go Horns...

More than a dollar...

Today we had a chance to see some friends "under" Las Vegas again. Will is 69 years old and has been living beneath the bright lights for nearly a decade. He's an incredibly intelligent, friendly man who writes and retains poetry in his mind. He asked us if we could bring a tape recorder to preserve his poems, should he die. We're coming up with some ideas to do better than that.

By the way, Will lives in your city too. Well, maybe not our Will, but a variation of him. Maybe next time you're out, stop and get a burger for (or with, if your really brave) a homeless person. It'll cost you a dollar but you'll meet someone really amazing. And that's worth more than a dollar...

A different approach

If you follow The Strip Church, you know that we tend to do things in out of the "ordinary" ways.

We go into brothels, strip clubs, and anywhere else we're welcome (or not welcome).

What about Adult Book Stores, you ask? Yup. We're there too. We've met some really great people at "the stores" over the last few weeks. You might also ask "Why would The Strip Church go into an adult book store?" Why not?

European Wedding?

Tonight we were doing our normal "Free Rides on the Strip". "Normal" is a relative term on the Strip of Las Vegas and this night was no exception. We met (follow this) a group from Europe, who were working in Tennessee at a ski resort for the winter, but were in Las Vegas to help their friends get married! So congratulations to the newlyweds!

Last night we hit the Strip with a new idea: let's take people's pictures in front of the Bellagio for free. Simple enough, right? It was a cool way to do something nice for people with no strings attached. And that was the hardest part: convincing folks there were no strings attached. It's funny how hard it is to do something for someone out of kindness. We need to get back to that. It should be expected. Go and do something for your neighbor.

The Least of These

We, once again, had a chance to visit the tunnels under Las Vegas last week. It’s hard to believe that people live beneath the Strip. Literally 20 feet below billions of dollars of construction and millions being won and lost daily in the casinos, there’s a world of darkness and decay.

We met Iron for the second time. He’s a former ironworker (his name) who moved to Las Vegas to start a business. His idea failed and he had no way home. When he walks into the sunshine, the first thing you notice about Iron is his striking blue eyes. He’s extremely polite and soft-spoken and says one of the things he misses most is fishing. “Not a lot of fishin’ holes in Las Vegas, you know.”

I think we are going to be friends. And we’re planning a fishing trip…

Friends from Tampa

Last night we made new friends. Several new friends. Mickey and Charlie were to gems of gentlemen who live on the streets of Vegas. A burger in their hand and a burger in their pocket, they left our conversations happy men.

The card flickers, always anticipating Thursday nights, were so grateful for burgers and waters as always. It was very cool to ask a group of about 10 if they wanted a Bible, and all of them assured us they had already received one. What an honor to give Spanish Bibles to people who either can't afford it, or don't want to spend the little money they do have on a Bible.

And the Strip Pics. Strip Pics is our newest outreach where we offer free pictures with people in front of the Bellagio. You can view those pictures here: http://stripchurch.com/blogs/thestrip/strippics.html. Rex, dressed up as Santa, made people smile, and we were ble to do something fun for people on the Strip.

And Toby the Clown. While he wasn't with us on the Strip, we couldn't help but learn a lot from him. Toby the Clown didn't let a person get by him without offering them a hat made out of balloons. He made people smile and had a contagious entusiasm about him. What a guy...

We're doing it! The Strip is undeniably being made a better place, one interaction at a time.

Consistency and Stability

We at The Strip Church have always had the motto of "Just Show Up." That's why it's so important to show up consistently on the Strip of Las Vegas. My favorite part of each week's outreach is giving free rides. People tend to really be blessed by bypassing the $2 public transportation and taking a ride on The Strip Church bus. What's funny is a lot of people demand us take a tip of 5 or $10 when they would have only paid $2 for the public transportation. We're able to show up in the lives of strangers and show them for a second a life of stability. To show them what it means to follow Jesus. We're not trying to win souls or try to change peoples' minds about what they came to Vegas to do. What we are doing is showing up and being consistently kind and compassionate towards each and every person who shows up on our shuttle bus.

Remember Remember

From Intern Stephen Borden:

Remember, remember the fifth of November. I know that its from a movie, but I think it works here too. Tonight was another amazing outreach on the strip of Las Vegas. Sadly, no volunteers where able to show up( Sad Face) But it was a good night anyway. ( Side note, if you still would like to volunteer, we would love to have you. Go to stripchurch.com for more info. Shameless plug, but whatever:)

Anyway, Dan, Betsy, and I went to down to the strip and handed put water to the card flickers. Once again, these guys were stoked to see us. It's still funny to me that every time they still try to give us cards at first until they recognize us and pull back. Anyhow, had a good time of jut smiling at these folks and having little conversations with to the best of our ability, since none of us are really fluent in Spanish. Tonight we meet a new guy named Ricardo. He spoke english very well and asked why we were doing this. When we explained to him the basis of Strip Church and that Jesus loves him, he began to tell us his story. Ricardo was a meth addict. Thankfully he has been clean for about 5 months and moved out to Vegas to get away from his influences. He said that he know that what he was doing by passing out the cards was wrong. But he felt like he had no other choice, since it was the only thing he could find that would keep him homeless and off drugs. Ricardo was a really cool dude, he even told us where a big homeless community was, so we could try to help them out. It was a good night as the card flickers go.

Then it was off to Bellagio, for some strip pics. Once again, I donned the costume of Rex the rabbit while Dan and Betsy were my hype people. People could take free pictures with Rex, and then we gave them a Jesus Loves Sin City Bible as a souvenir. Pretty good night there. Oh, and this one guy wanted to challenge Rex to a dance battle. Which of course I had to accept. We threw down for a couple of minutes, throwing out our best moves, when we decided to call it off. ( Which as a side note, I totally won the battle on style points.)

The fifth of November was most definitely night to remember.

Where Are You From?

Last night was not just another Strip Outreach for the Strip Church Team and Volunteers, in fact it never is! Every time we open those bus doors and offer a free ride to your chosen destination on the strip people are either disturb or jump on like they won the lottery; and last night was no exception. We had a full bus all night and it was the place to be; there were people from all over the country and even world. It is an awesome thing to lend a hand to people through a free ride and also an ear for those few minutes you have with each other. Last night a businessman from Mexico shared the growing concern with kidnapping in his city. He story is real; he faces this reality daily and fears for his kids, asking for prayer was his request as he left the bus. Another man shared with a heavy heart the recent bitter end of a marriage. His voice was harsh at first and then he became more reflective by the time we got him to his destination. The hope is that our time with him would lead to positive things, rather than the encouraged recklessness of vegas. At the end of the night it became clear that the desire to go bless others had turned into them having blessed us and we are equally as thankful for those conversations and moments, even if it is just on a bus in the middle of sin city!

Strip Outreach

I would like to apologize for my inconsistency in blogging on here.
I assure you we have been on the Strip doing ministry each week. We
have continued to build great relationships with guys and gals on the
Strip of Las Vegas.

Tonight we had a troublesome start, with
the battery to the bus being dead. We went and borrowed a battery
charger from a local mechanic shop, but then we couldn't find the
battery! It sounds ignorant, and it is. If nothing else, this is our
desperate plea for a local who knows about all things mechanical to
come help us out! We'll get it running before next week.

We
hit the Strip in our cars and picked up some burgers and waters to hand
out to our card flicking friends. We are in the process of getting
some Bibles printed in Spanish for these guys. Most of them don't
speak English, so it's imperative we get the Word in Spanish as soon as
possible. We really feel like the smiles and gratefulness in these
peoples' eyes lets us know we have to go back each week. Giving hungry
people a bite to eat and thirsty people a drink really provides an
impact that we can't even know or understand right now. But we go back
and trust that God can do a work in peoples' lives through simple acts
of kindness.

I had a great conversation with an older gentleman
named Joseph. He told me he used to be an administrative assistant but
the economy forced him to take a job handing out cards promoting
prostituiton on the Strip. What a tragedy. He spoke very good
English, but it's all he can do right now. His big smile and his
heartful laugh let me know that we got to provide a bit of life to this
guy. A bit of hope in a situation he feels hopeless in.

We
got to speak with a couple homeless guys who were so touched by the
simplicity of a hamburger and a bottle of water. They were grateful
that someone cared enough to stop and share. To let them know that
someone does care about their story and their life.

One of our
interns, Betsy, has built a great relationship with a lady on the
Strip. What a cool thing it is to see them embrace each other when
they see each other.

I am honored that God trusts us to be in
this position. That we can go and serve and do the things that the
Lord calls us to do. Join us if you will. Pray for us if you think
about it. We are excited to be a part of this thing that is much bigger than ourselves.

Free Rides!

Last night we hit the Strip once more in the Strip Shuttle. As ever, we kicked off by visiting our friends who work giving out flyers for escort girls. We love to serve those guys (and girls) by bringing them some food and drink. The language barrier is still a problem (we don't know any Spanish!), but they know we're from a church, and they're always super-thankful. It's got to the point now where they come up to the bus if they see it, because they know we've always got treats for them! If you would like to help out with this service, and can help translate for us, please get in touch - we'd love to work with you!

After we gave away all our food and water (average time: 10 minutes!) we started to stop by all the bus stops we passed to offer lifts to people who were waiting. We gave free rides to four super-friendly people last night, and it was great to help them out and get to know them a bit. They were all really thankful for the free ride, and were great to chat with.

It's an amazing privilege to help these folks out on a regular basis, and we love meeting them all. It's crazy to think that we can have a big impact on some people, just by giving them a free bottle of water, or saving them just one bus fare. If you've got any ideas for other ways we could help people out, send us an email at info@stripchurch.com

We'll be out on the Strip again before you know it - keep your eyes peeled for the Shuttle next time you're out!

Rides and Burgers

Hey everybody, Rob the Intern here! We've got huge plans for tonight; going down to the strip to hand out some burgers & water to the card flicker guys, and then seeing what we can do about giving people some free rides!

It should be a great outreach opportunity as we continue to witness to the men and women workig the strip - even if what they're doing/promoting isn't right, were here to let them know they're loved. In the future it would be great to bring along some people fluent in Spanish, so that we can have an even bigger connection with them, but in the mean time we will continue to serve through the power of double cheeseburgers and ice cold H20.

Once we are out of burgers then were moving onto some free rides. If your on the strip, look for us and we'll get you to where you need to go! This is just another way that we are looking to serve people in vegas and let them know that we've got their back.

See you on the strip!

Bringin' the desert its drink.

One of our taglines for the Strip Church is "Bringin' the desert its drink". We've taken that idea to the Strip in the form of our own branded bottled water that says "The Strip Church" on the side with our website URL tagged on the bottom.

Whether it's an overheated tourist on the street in the heat of the day or a group of barhoppers at night, The Strip Church bottled water is a good way to reach out and serve Strip Church pedestrians with a fresh drink of water while opening up the lines of communication. We've even extended our aqua to the "Girls, Girls, Girls" crew who stand on the streets all day to handing out cards for the escort services.

All of this to say, the water is a great conversation starter, putting us in the middle of the people. A simple way to serve and communicate love on the Strip.
